Specialists dye-test jets, lights, drains and the spillway, pressure test the spa's own suction, return and air lines, and check heaters, pumps and unions at the equipment, since spa plumbing works harder and runs hotter than the pool's.
Which Kinds of Spas Leak, and Where?
Attached in-ground spas share equipment with the pool and usually have their own suction and return lines plus an air blower line. Valves at the equipment send water to the spa or pool, and a leaking valve can make one drain into the other.
Raised spas with a spillover sit higher than the pool, so their plumbing is always under extra water pressure. The spillway itself, the tile and coping at the overflow, and the bond between spa and pool shell are common leak points. A raised spa can slowly empty into the pool, which hides the loss until you look at the spa level.
Standalone hot tubs are self-contained acrylic shells with pumps, heaters and dozens of jets inside the cabinet. Leaks usually show as water under the tub or inside the cabinet, at pump seals, heater unions, jet bodies or the many fittings between them.
Signs of a Spa or Hot Tub Leak
- The spa drops noticeably overnight or between uses
- The pool rises or overflows while the spa drops (spa draining into pool)
- Water around the base of a raised spa or under a hot tub cabinet
- Cracked tile or coping at the spillway
- Jets with weak flow or air bubbles when the blower is off
- Heater cycling more than usual or leaking at unions
- Damp spots in the deck near the spa
How Are Spa Leaks Found?
- Level checks. Spa and pool levels are compared with the pump on and off, and valve positions are checked for leakage between bodies of water.
- Dye testing at every jet, light, drain, the spillway and any cracks.
- Pressure testing of spa suction, return and air lines, isolated from the pool plumbing. See pool plumbing pressure testing.
- Equipment inspection of the spa pump, heater, blower and valves.
- For hot tubs: panels are opened and the pump, heater, jets and manifold are checked while the system runs.
What You Can Check First
- Mark the spa level at bedtime and check it in the morning with the pump off.
- Do the same with the pump on its normal schedule.
- For a raised spa, check whether the pool level rises as the spa drops.
- For a hot tub, look under and inside the cabinet for water, white crust or corrosion.
Pro tip: If your raised spa only drops when the pump is off, a leaking diverter valve may be letting it drain back into the pool. That's a valve fix, not a structural leak.
Spas in Plant City Homes
Pool-and-spa combinations are common in many Plant City neighborhoods, from established homes around Walden Lake to newer builds. Spa plumbing runs hotter and works harder than pool plumbing, and in Florida's year-round swim season it gets heavy use. Sandy soil settling under raised spas can also crack tile at the spillway. For the rest of the pool, see pool leak detection in Plant City.
After the Leak Is Found
You'll get the leak location and options: resealing a jet or light, rebuilding a valve, repairing a spillway, fixing a heater union, or repairing a buried spa line. Call (813) 303-9621 for a free quote through our leak detection in Plant City, Florida line.
Warning: Turn off power to a hot tub before opening equipment panels, and keep children away from open spa covers during repairs.
Spa & Hot Tub Leak Detection FAQs
Why does my spa drain into my pool?
A worn or misaligned diverter valve can let water flow from a raised spa back into the pool, especially when the pump is off. The spa drops while the pool rises.
Can a hot tub leak be fixed without replacing it?
Usually. Most hot tub leaks are at fittings, pump seals, heater unions or jet bodies, which can be repaired once found.
How do I tell if the spa or pool is leaking?
Track both levels separately with the pump on and off. If the spa drops and the pool rises, it's a valve. If both drop, there's a leak somewhere in the shared system.
Do you test spa air blower lines?
Yes. Blower and air lines are checked along with suction and return lines.
How do I get a quote for spa leak detection?
Call (813) 303-9621 and describe whether it's an attached spa, raised spa or standalone hot tub. A local specialist can give you a free quote.
